CoreTech Revolution’s Michelle Burton will be presenting at next month’s Indiana Rural Health Association (IRHA) Spring Conference on the topic of “Understanding True Electronic Health Record (EHR) Integration for Healthcare.” As a supplement to that presentation, we’ll outline in this article the current state of the rural health community, as well as how organizations can work together toward EHR integration and interoperability for the benefit of all.

Telemedicine involves the use of telecommunication and IT (using the Internet, wireless, satellite and telephone media) to provide health care services from a distance. Its use can help eliminate location or time-based patient barriers while improving overall cost and effectiveness of care. More than 40 years ago, hospitals practiced telemedicine when they offered care to patients in remote areas. Today, telemedicine has spread rapidly within specialty departments, home health care and private practices, as well as with consumer engagement through the use of advanced technology.

Telemedicine has become a proven way for the health care industry to increase its reach to patients, while offering flexibility in scheduling, operational efficiencies, and improved patient outcomes. This month, we have chosen to highlight two telemedicine applications — virtual conferencing and remote monitoring — which we believe offer significant impacts on the future of healthcare.

The Nationwide Interoperability Plan (and how you can help)

You may have heard about the 10-year vision plan that the Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology (ONC) laid out in 2014. In this plan, the ONC envisions a “health IT ecosystem” in which the efficient and effective sharing of electronic health information results in an empowered, healthier population, better clinical decision-making and smarter spending.

Ambulatory Care and the Challenges of Interoperability

In order to create a true “health IT ecosystem” as envisioned by the ONC, care providers must be better able to exchange or use health information in a timely matter in order to move from a billing-centered to a clinician-based perspective. In the ambulatory care setting, providers have been slow to adopt electronic health records (EHRs) and move toward interoperability, mainly due to workflow integration issues.
